MoroBeats

Celebrating diversity is at the core of MoroBeats.

Founded in 2014 by DJ Medmessiah, MoroBeats started as a creative group where individuals showcase their music, sound, local instruments and language, free from the stigma associated with being Moro. It wasn’t until 2015 when the group evolved into a collective of individuals celebrating their roots and individuality with hip-hop as their platform.

Pioneered by DJ Medmessiah, Zaki, Rapper Mista, Miss A, Fateeha, and Rudic, their members now include Tha Wizard, Dizzy D of H20 Klann, Prophecee, Malik, Teemo, Naus, and JMara. Each one of them has their own story to tell, united by a shared goal to push back against social injustices through hip-hop.

DJ Medmessiah

Med started as a breakdancer in his teens during the 90s, where he was exposed to rap, hip-hop, and started to play as a DJ. His experience in the underground hip-hop scene led him back to his roots in Mindanao, where he found his purpose in putting together a powerhouse of hip-hop talents bringing culture and southern Philippine sensibilities to form MoroBeats, the Boom Baps Royalty of Asia.

Ms. A and Fateeha

Sisters Ms. A and Fateeha began rapping and writing their own lyrics at a young age. They talk about their stories as Muslim FemCees in a male dominated industry, and how they use their music to inspire other people and express their personal advocacy on mental healt and well-being, and anti-discrimination.

JMara and Tofu

While serving time in prison, with nothing but the TV to pass the time, JMara wrote the lyrics to the song “Mahal kong Pilipinas” as a response to the daily injustices faced by Filipinos. While in the track “Gulo,” which tackles the Israeli-led conflict in Palestine as well as government accountability, JMara wrote the lyrics with Tofu, unafraid to confront difficult topics, they continue to write to express both hope and rage. Both artists aim to use their music to bring difficult issues into the spotlight and talk about experiencing injustices that are often overlooked by the society.

MoroBeats is Amnesty’s partner in calling for an end to genocide in Palestine.

During their Ignite Convo interview in 2024 for Human Rights Week, members of MoroBeats shared their views on the importance of using music as a tool for activism. The group highlighted the challenges of advocating for Palestine, including censorship and online repression. Despite these hurdles, they remain committed to spreading awareness and using their platform to call for humanitarian aid for Gaza and the end to genocide. Their music, infused with activism, continues to inspire and educate audiences, proving that freedom of expression is a critical tool in the fight against injustice.

The MoroBeats message is clear — music transcends borders and language barriers. When they rap about Palestine, they’re not just telling a story but also amplifying the voices of those who are silenced. They emphasized the responsibility as artists to stand against oppression, whether in their own country or abroad.
