Letter writing

AI came into being following a temporary letter-writing campaign in 1961, and making direct appeals to the authorities responsible for human rights violations remains a core part of AI’s work.

AI researches and disseminates information on cases which require direct appeals together with suggestions for the content of the appeal and all contact details available to reach the addressees.

Worldwide Appeals
These are cases concerning individual victims of human rights abuses on which AI members around the world take action. The case is chosen if AI feels it will benefit from concentrated letter-writing and publicity. This is featured in the AI newsletter, Wire, and locally at the campAIgn newsletter.

On-line petitions
Appeals which are featured in AI’s website (www.amnesty.org) that people can take action on using the internet.

An appeal from you to the authorities can help the victims of human rights violations whose stories are told here. You can help free a prisoner of conscience or stop torture. You can bring liberty to a victim of 'disappearance'. You may prevent an execution. Every appeal counts.
